Keeping an Eye on the Ōtaki Cycleways and Walkways Programme

The Kāpiti Coast District Council ‘Cycleway, Walkway and Bridleway (CWB) Strategy’ sets out the vision for a network around and within Ōtaki.

The network is a combination of recreational and ‘commuter’ links and Council investment in Ōtaki is balanced with investment in other parts of the District.   It is important that the Ōtaki community continues to advocate for the linkages it wants.   The New Zealand Transport Agency subsidises some of the costs of establishing and maintaining commuter cycling linkages.

Kāpiti Coast District Council also funds a road safety programme and a safe routes to schools programme which supports the wider vision of providing alternatives to car travel.

As part of the proposed Ōtaki Expressway, the New Zealand Transport Agency, agreed to provide a cycleway along the general route. A key focus over the next two years will be ensuring the completion of the cycleway to go with the extension of the expressway from Waikanae to just north of Ōtaki. This has been started and you can see it progressing near Te Hapua Road.

We’re also supporters of the CWB on the Ōtaki to North Levin (O2NL) route. It is important for the community to also continue to advocate for this opportunity to link Ōtaki and Levin.
