Kāpiti Coast District Council in partnership with Blended Fuel Solutions NZ, a clean technology business based out of the Ōtaki, trialed an emulsion fuel (water and diesel) on some of its older mowers in 2012/13. The emulsion fuel enables more efficient engine performance, reduced emissions and reduced use of diesel fuel. The trials have opened doors to for further trials with UZabus and Kiwirail. Leigh Ramsey of Blended Fuels Solutions NZ has also worked with Ōtaki College students and is currently trialling the system with KiwiRail and its ferry fleet.
